At midnight, my girlfriend sent me a text: “OMG, I just saw a total psycho with a knife in the stairwell through the peephole! He’s going nuts, like, attacking people! He saw me! He’s coming in!”
I instantly replied: “Don’t open the door, no matter what. Stay put—I’m on my way.”
By then, I’d already flagged down a cab, my heart racing the entire ride.
After seeing her message, I was kinda annoyed. “You scared the crap out of me! You should’ve been clearer earlier!”
My girlfriend seemed totally unfazed. “Who knew you’d actually come? I was just messing around. What’s the big deal? You’re not actually mad, are you? Hehe.”
I sighed. “No, I’m just glad you’re okay. But seriously, don’t pull that kind of joke again, especially not in the middle of the night. It’s pretty terrifying.”
Girlfriend: “Okay, won’t do it again, hehe.”
Even with that, I couldn’t fully chill, so I tried a video call.
The call was immediately hung up after one ring.
I asked, “Why aren’t you answering the video?”
Girlfriend: “I’m really sleepy, I want to sleep, hehe.”
Seeing the ‘hehe’ on the screen, I felt something was off.
Me: “Why are you laughing?”
Girlfriend: “It’s nothing, just in a good mood tonight.”
The more I looked at it, the weirder it felt. My girlfriend is usually more serious—she’d never use a word like ‘hehe’ with such a teasing, playful vibe. Could someone else be using her phone? The thought sent a chill down my spine, and I immediately tried another video call. This time, it didn’t hang up right away, but it rang for ages without anyone picking up.
Then I called her regular number.
Surprisingly, the call connected. My girlfriend’s voice sounded exhausted: “What is it? I’m trying to sleep. I’m so tired.”
I asked anxiously: “Why didn’t you answer the video?”
My girlfriend repeated: “I’m really sleepy, I want to sleep.”
Then she hung up.
The driver glanced at me in the rearview mirror. “Hey, you good? You don’t look so hot.”
In the mirror, my face was pale, and my hands were shaking like crazy. Overcome with panic, I urged the driver to step on it, telling him my girlfriend might be in danger!
The driver seemed tense too and sped toward our destination.
I sent a text to my girlfriend: “Say something to me.”
She replied quickly with a voice message: “What do you want me to say? I’m going to sleep, so tired.”
